Applied Functional Medicine Limited has evolved from the Society for Complementary Medicine which was founded in 1990. American naturopath Robert H. Jacobs came to the U.K. to be the medical director of SCM and he now continues in this role for Applied Functional Medicine Limited.

Robert H. Jacobs is the driving force behind Applied Functional Medicine. He is a Naturopath with over 27 years of experience in natural medicine - both in the UK and America. He still maintains a practice in Los Angeles. A qualified Naturopath and Homeopath, he is a member of the British Naturopathic Medical Association, the General Register of Naturopaths and the Homeopathic Medical Association.
